Summary
A surrealistic, allegorical portrayal of poverty, hunger, and death in a 16th-century Mexican village"During the feast of All Souls Day, Macario, a Mexican peasant, revolts against his lifetime of poverty by vowing never to eat again until he has a whole turkey for himself. His wife steals one for him, cooks it, and tells him to eat it while his five hungry children are sleeping. His hunger stronger than his conscience, Macario goes into the woods to enjoy his feast. Two strangers representing the Devil and God, stop Macario and ask to share his food, but he refuses. He is then confronted by Death, who appears so desperate than Macario divides the turkey in order to enjoy his half undisturbed. In return Death gives the poor peasant a gourd of water which will heal the sick, but Death must give his consent in each instance; if Death appears at the head of the bed, Macario may not proceed. The liquid brings great fame and wealth to Macario until the Inquisition accuses him of being an instrument of the Devil. He is fetched from prison and given a single chance to escape death: if he can cure the Viceroy's ailing son, he will be set free. However, Death refuses to leave the head of the sick bed, and Macario is forced to flee. In his panic he runs into Death's cave where a candle burns for each human life. Macario tries to escape with his own candle, but he fails. His wife finds his body lying by a tree; in front of him is his half of the turkey"--TCM website, May 3, 2019., http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/82232/Macario/full-synopsis.html
